Andromium OS - Chromecast (Nexus 6) support

Nexus 6 and Chromecast support: What is the trade off between using Chromecast and direct HDMI connection?
  1.  Like the HTC and LG phone, the Nexus 6 phone is missing a hardware component. In this case Nexus 6 and most recent Moto phones doesn’t have any USB display-out capability build into the USB connector.
  2. When using N6 & Chromecast to do display-out to TV/Monitor, it will introduce a slight variable latency (25ms to 100ms+). This latency can be almost unnoticeable to the user, when users are working on office documents, coding, or watching videos. The latency varies depending on how much is changing on the TV/Monitor display at any given time.
    1. When users are working on Word or Excel documents or coding, the screen display is mostly static/unchanging. At this point the latency is at the lowest (~25ms) because there is a very low amount of data being sent between the N6 and Chromecast.
    2. Watching videos tends to introduce a bit higher latency (~60ms or higher), but since both video and audio are staying in sync, and because the user is not actively using keyboard or mouse. Latency won’t impact the user experience.
    3. Gaming is an area where latency can become an issue. For any games that require twitch reaction: FPS, Platform games…, latency can reduce the user experience. However, for games that are not driven by twitch reactions: RPG, 4x strategy, turn based games…, latency shouldn’t be a problem.
    4. For some reference on latency: Game controller manufactures usually target sub 15ms latency for their controllers.
    5. According to John Carmack, one of the chief developers of Oculus Rift, latency around 20ms and lower are not noticeable by most people.
  3. We are currently also testing GS5, OPO and Moto X 2nd gen. Chromecast support and the results are pretty encouraging
  4. Unfortunately, testing with GS4 and Note2 Chromecast is less than encouraging as both latency and image quality is a problem.
Update (12/20/2014): We have finished preliminary testing of GS5, N5, and OPO, and the latency and image quality was similar to the Nexus6 and Note4, so we are officially supporting Andromium OS on those devices. We are also further adding HTC One M8, and LG G3 to our support list, because they are very similar to the 3 phone tested above (One M8 same internal as GS5 & G3 same internal as OPO).

To all our supporters and backers: Happy Holidays.

- Gordon

  1. Hello. What's about supporting Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini (SM-G800F)?

  2. Hi @wildej, unfortunately S5 mini doesn't seem to have any video-out capability build into the USB port. Also the CPU is little bit too under-power to run Chromecast to provide a good user experience. Sorry to be a bearer of bad news.

  3. Hi @Allen, unfortunately note 2 doesn't work well with Chromecast (significant UI lag), but it works great with the Andromium Dock

    1. Hi Balaji, we have never tested Chromecast with any other CPU beside high end ARM SoC, it is unknown how well Intel SoC can handle Chromecast. So only way to know is for your to try it and let us know :)

    1. Yes Note 3 can work with both the Andromium Dock, and Chromecast. So you can choose the best option for your use case.

    2. This is great, I own a Note 3 and an Android tablet, will it work with tablets? What will the price of the software without the dock be?

    3. Hi Chales the software only tier is the "Hacker Backer" tier, the current pledge cost is $10.

We are adding Android Tablet support down the road, to run the tablet in similar fashion as MS Surface tablets.

    4. Gordon, in my opinion I think a lot of people with Android tablets will be interested in your product for many reasons. One of them is the processing power of them, RAM, and battery life as well. Another one would be the fact that a lot of people want to find more ways to use their tablets, and most of the time they want to hold on to their phones.
Hopefully, you'll have finished the table's version by the time you laugh your company.

    5. Hi Charles, we are planning to create a "Tablet Mode" for Andromium OS that allow users to user their Android tablet in a similar manner as MS Surface. We are targeting April 2015 for public release of this functionality.

  11. Can we also expect support for the Droid Turbo as well (using Chromecast), given that you are supporting the Nexus 6 and Moto X 2?

    1. Hi Lee, that is up to you, there are advantages to using Andromium Dock, specially if you have USB keyboard and Mouse, or plan to play games with Andromium OS. However it will cost more, so you can decide if it is worth the cost to get the dock.

    2. How are things proceeding? SDK release still in June?

      Delete
    3. Hi Chris, the SDK is currently in active development. But progress has been a little bit slow due to the fact we are short handed on the developer side of things. So the initial public availability of the SDK is push back till fall. Sorry for the delay

  13. Hello,

    1. Hi Manuel, unfortunately the Wiko doesn't have enough Ram (2GB min) to be able to run Andromium OS. Also the Cortex A7 CPU is also little bit under power in order provide a good user experience.

  14. Hello, I just saw your kickstarter campaign and have some questions. Does it support the Sony Z3 Compact through the dock or only by Chromecast and if it does then which dock should I buy? Also, if you do not reach $100 000 will I still get the Andromium? Thanks in advance!

  15. Does Andromium run under LL 5.1 or does the change in partition structure from KK cause issues?

    1. Unfortunately, we currently don't have a 5.1 device on hand to test. But from release note of Android M, there shouldn't be any issues (in theory) that will prevent Andromium OS working on 5.1 devices.

  19. Andromium OS update:

    1) LL 5.1 seem work fine, we haven't came across an compatibility issues.

    2) SDK currently is the main focus of active development. If any Android developers are interested in getting early access, please send me an email. We looking to start close beta testing for the SDK in next month or so.

PS: for some reason, blogger seem to be broken for me. Can't replay to any existing comments :(

  21. Question: If you installed Andromium OS and VMLite VNC Server app on rooted high end smartphone then install YouMap app on a large Android tablet with a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, would this work?

  22. Also how does Andromium OS compare to Remix? Are they the same approach? How are they functionally different? How are their roadmaps different?
